Mataia Two Day Walk: 20km
2 day, 20km circular walk traversing farmland, saltmarsh
wetlands and coastal native bush of the historic Mataia Farm
Your booking day is the afternoon of the day you arrive at
historic Mataia Homestead, the heart of the Gardner family farm ‘Mataia’.
Spend the night relaxing and unwinding and enjoy the surrounding 5ha
of gardens including large orchard, herb and vegetable gardens, rose
and perennial plantings.
On your first day you will walk from Mataia Homestead following
alongside the Mataia Creek out to the Kaipara Harbour. The track
winds across boardwalks through beautiful Kauri groves, along the
coastline through regenerating native bush, established coastal
forest and salt marsh wetlands before you head inland into a large
stand of native bush known as ‘Hoopers Bush’. From here pass over
farmland to your second nights’ accommodation at the Farm Cottage
and watch the sun set over the Kaipara Harbour as you enjoy a
well-deserved beer or wine!
The next morning wake with the Tui and enjoy rural views before
heading out towards the shearing shed. You then walk down over the
saltmarsh wetlands before veering off up to Huikarokaro Pa – the
largest ancient Maori Pa site on the farm. From here you walk up in
the canopy of the coastal bush with spectacular views out across the
harbour through the leaves of the massive Pohutakawa and Puriri. The
walk winds back through the native bush before you link up to the
Mataia Creek track and finish up back at Mataia Homestead.
